Dining, Drinking and Lounging around the Frank Erwin Center – March Madness

Here is a guide to dining, drinking and lounging in the heart of all the NCAA March Madness.

El Mercado Restaurant – You will find consistent Tex-Mex grub at this chain.  They serve solid drinks and their food definitely has a kick.

Hickory Street Bar & Grille – Hang out on their deck and enjoy the sites along with homegrown Austin eats.  Pop in here for breakfast, lunch or dinner and don’t forget about their Sunday brunch buffet.  They have lots of specials but their weekday Happy hour runs from 3-7 $3 Well Liquor, $3 House Margaritas, $4 House Wine by the Glass, $2.50 Domestic Beer, $2 off all appetizers.

Players – Come here for a laid back vibe with quality food and a diverse menu.  Enjoy their Biergarten or catch the games in the dining room on their big TV’s.  Click here  to download their coupon (1/4 pd hamburger, french fries and medium drink $5.08 plus tax).

Sagra – Sagra is a casual, yet elegant Italian enoteca and trattoria.  Their menu offers new renditions of Old World classics and feature wood-fired pizzas, homemade mozzarella, house-cured meats and homemade pastas.  Their daily Happy Hour runs from 4-7 $2 off specialty drinks, beer, wine, 1/2 off pizza ,1 Gourmet pizza and 5 beers for $10.

Scholz Garten – Head here for some tasty German fare and a casual atmosphere.  Make sure to check out their spacious Biergarten.   Fill up on Wiener Schnitzel $9.50 or Grilled Bratwurst $9.00 before or after the game.  They offer a weekday Happy Hour from 4-8 and it’s a rotating discount on drinks.

Serranos Cafe & Cantina – You can get your Mesquite Tex-Mex fix on here with dishes like their Pollo Con Queso (Three Chicken Thighs Mesquite Grilled and topped with Chile con Queso, served over Rice with a Vegetable Alambre).  Their weekday Happy Hour runs from 3-6:30 $2.50 House and Flavored Margaritas, $2.00 wells.

Stubb’s Bar-B-Q – If you have the time this is a great place to check out live music, it’s an outdoor venue serving tasty Cue.  Check out their Gospel Brunch on Sundays with live music and enjoy the perfect Bloody Mary created by YOU at their world famous “make your own” Bloody Mary bar.

Texas Chili Parlor – TCP is a not-to-be-missed bit of local color serving traditional Lone Star chili with some heat from “X” for beginners, or you can try their “XX” and sample at your own risk their “XXX”.  Their weekday Happy Hour runs from 4-6 and offers discounts on drinks and 1/2 off nachos.

The Carillon – Enjoy fine dining with beautiful ambiance at this American Grill.  Try their 3 course tasting menu for $50 or their 6 course tasting for $70.  Add $35 for a wine pairing.

The Clay Pit – Clay Pit Contemporary Indian Cuisine is a nationally acclaimed, high-energy, contemporary Indian restaurant and bar with a warm and inviting ambiance.  They offer fresh, innovative Indian cuisine at moderate prices, along with an extensive selection of wines, house drinks, and draft and bottled beers.

The Cloak Room – This is a diamond in the rough with a great juke box.  The Cloak Room is a small, dark lounge serving stiff drinks.  Although it’s a little difficult to locate you will be happy you did.  Their weekday Happy Hour runs from 3-7 $1 off Beer and Wells.

The Dog & Duck Pub – They have a great beer selection (42 taps) and a diverse menu from fish n chips to falafel.  They have plenty of TV’s as well as darts, pool tables and board games to unwind in-between games.  Their daily Happy Hour runs from 3-7 $4.25 Pints of differing beer.

The Mohawk – Lots of options when you walk into this Lounge/Music Venue/Bar.  The Lounge (Green Room) features comfortable couches, a pool table along with Buck Hunter.  Head to their roofdeck bar and unwind after the games with a great beer selection.  Enjoy the weekday Happy Hour from 5-9 in the Mohawk Bar where you can find loads of imports and drafts.

Quattro Gatti – If your looking for authentic Italian food look no further than Quattro Gatti.  They are open for lunch and dinner 6 days a week (closed Sundays).  The ambiance is relaxed and the service is great.
