National Egg Nog Day

December 24th is National Egg Nog Day! Out of my 27 years on this planet, this year was the first time I tried this delicious, frothy drink and it is truly fantastic. Dating all the way back to the 14th Century, historians trace Egg Nog back to “posset”, a hot beverage of milk, spice, and wine. Although this drink was consumed mostly for pleasure, it was also used as a remedy for colds and the flu.

Along with our first President’s Egg Nog recipe, here are some fabulous recipes for you to enjoy this holiday season…

George Washington served Egg Nog at Christmas in Mount Vernon. It was said to be one of his favorite concoctions. His recipe is now all over the internet, yet he forgets to include the number of eggs needed for the recipe. Here it is, in his own words:

One quart cream, one quart milk, one dozen tablespoons sugar, one pint brandy, ½ pint rye whiskey, ½ pint Jamaica rum, ¼ pint sherry – mix liquor first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well.   Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let set in cool place for several days. Taste frequently.

And here is Alton Brown’s recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/3 C. sugar, plus 1 tablespoon
  • 1 pint whole milk
  • 1 C. heavy cream
  • 3 oz. bourbon
  • 1 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
  • 4 egg whites *

In a bowl beat the eggs yolks until they lighten in color. Gradually add 1/3 C. sugar and continue to beat until dissolved. Add the milk, cream, bourbon, and nutmeg and stir to combine. Place the egg whites in a bowl and beat until soft peaks form. With mixer still going, add 1 Tbsp. of sugar until stiff peaks form. Then add to the original mixture, chill and serve.
